Planning and Zoning Commission
The Planning and Zoning Commission consists of five board members and provides oversight of the City’s zoning and subdivision ordinances. As an advisory body, the Commission reviews subdivision plats and rezoning requests and makes recommendations to City Council. Its work helps guide responsible growth, encourage new investment, and support quality development throughout the City. The Commission meets in the City Council Chambers on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.
Economic Development Corporation
The Economic Development Corporation Board consists of seven board members. Although appointed by City Council, the EDC operates as an independent corporate entity in partnership with the City. On behalf of the City, the Board develops, implements, supports, and finances projects as authorized by its Articles of Incorporation, helping promote economic growth and community development in Freeport. The Board meets in the City Council Chambers on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.
Board of Adjustment
The Board of Adjustment consists of five board members and two alternates, all appointed by City Council. The Board may grant or deny applications for variances and special exceptions to the City’s Zoning Ordinance and hears appeals regarding decisions made by the Building Official in the enforcement of city ordinances. As a quasi-judicial body, the Board’s decisions are final and may only be challenged in a court of law. The Board meets as needed on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
Charter Review
The Charter Review Commission consists of five members who are citizens of the City of Freeport. The Commission reviews the City Charter and proposes amendments to ensure compliance with state law and alignment with current conditions. The Commission reports its findings and recommendations to City Council, and any proposed amendments are ultimately submitted to the voters for approval. The Commission meets in odd-numbered years on the third Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Conference Room.
Senior Citizens Commission
The Senior Citizens Commission consists of seven board members. The Commission recommends policy changes on issues that affect or improve the quality of life and services for senior citizens in Freeport. It also provides recommendations to other City boards, commissions, and committees on matters impacting seniors. In partnership with the City, the Commission helps host and participate in annual events and activities that engage and support the senior community. The Commission meets every third Monday at 12:00 p.m. at the Freeport RiverPlace.
Beautification/Parks and Recreation
The Parks and Recreation Board consists of seven board members. The Board is dedicated to enhancing the recreational and botanical environment of the City of Freeport. Members work closely with City staff to provide input on priorities and goals related to park infrastructure, programs, and improvements. The Board also plays an active role as volunteers in recreational activities and community events. The Board meets every fourth Friday of the month at 10:00 a.m. in the City Hall Conference Room.
Historical Commission and Main Street
This Board consists of nine members. Its purpose is to identify, preserve, and promote the history of the City of Freeport and the surrounding area for the benefit, education, and enrichment of the community. The Board supports and advances the goals and criteria of the Texas Main Street Program, focusing on historic preservation and the economic revitalization of downtown Freeport. Its work follows the National Main Street Approach, emphasizing organization, economic vitality, design, and promotion to strengthen and enhance the image of the historic downtown district. The Board meets every third Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at the Freeport Historical Museum.
Civil Service Commission
This Commission consists of three members. Its purpose is to oversee and administer the Civil Service System for the Police and Fire Department in accordance with state law and local regulations. The Commission is responsible for ensuring fair and impartial employment practices, including matters related to hiring, promotions, disciplinary actions, and appeals for civil service employees. The Commission meets every first and third Wednesday of the month.
